A GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM FOR CAREERS?
직업을 위한 위성항법장치

Although I was born in Germany, the first time I had been back to Europe was in 1997. My aunt and uncle, who had traveled the continent on several occasions, served as tour guides as we worked our way through parts of Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic and Germany, finally reaching our destination, the picturesque city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, where we attended a CBMC convention.

On several occasions during our travels we found ourselves headed in a wrong direction and would wind up going several kilometers out of our way before discovering our error in navigation. Our in-car compass was helpful, but it would have been better to have someone – or something – to help us in making the correct turns.
여행하는 동안 여러 차례 우리는 방향을 잘못 잡고 나아가다가 네비게이션에 오류가 있는 것을 발견하였을 때 이미 우리는 가는 길에서 수 킬로미터를 벗어나서 다른 방향으로 가고 있다는 것을 알았다. 우리의 차 안에 있는 나침반이 도움이 되었으나 누군가 – 혹은 무엇인가 – 올바르게 방향을 잡는데 도움을 주면 좋을 것 같았다.
Today, of course, many vehicles are equipped with Global Positioning Systems (GPS), and similar tracking assistance is available on mobile phones. As I understand it, signals are beamed up to a satellite orbiting above the earth, and information is sent from the satellite to the person needing it. Literally, it provides guidance from on high. Some people already have become so accustomed to using their GPS devices that they wonder how they ever survived before they were invented.
오늘날은 물론 많은 차량에 위성항법장치(GPS)가 설치되어 있고 휴대전화에도 그와 유사하게 추적을 돕는 기능이 있다. 내가 아는 바로는 신호가 지구 위 궤도를 선회하는 위성에 전송되고 정보가 위성으로부터 필요한 사람에게 보내진다. 말 그대로 그것은 위로부터 안내를 해주는 것이다. 어떤 사람들은 이미 GPS장치를 사용하는데 너무 익숙해져서 그것이 발명되기 전에 어떻게 살았는지 의아하게 생각한다.
What if someone were to develop a GPS device for career guidance, or for making important business decisions? As we observe the plight of the global economy, a GPS for the business and professional world certainly would have been valuable for avoiding some of the serious “wrong turns” that corporate leaders have made.
누군가 직업에 관한 안내, 혹은 중요한 사업상의 결정을 위한 GPS장치를 개발하게 된다면 어떨까? 우리는 세계적인 경제 불황을 바라보고 있으므로, 사업과 전문직 분야를 위한 GPS와 같은 것이 있으면 기업 지도자들이 크게 “틀린 방향설정”을 할 때 그 중 얼마를 회피하는데 틀림없이 소중에게 쓰일 것이다.
Actually, such a GPS resource does exist, although you cannot buy it at your local electronics or office supply store, and automotive manufacturers cannot install it in your vehicle.
실제로 그러한 GPS와 같은 수단이 존재하는데, 그것은 동네 전자제품이나 사무용품 가게에서 구입할 수 없고 자동차 제조업체가 그것을 차 안에 설치할 수는 없다.
A verse in the Bible’s Old Testament reads, “I am a foreigner here on earth; I need the guidance of your commands. Do not hide them from me!” (Psalm 119:19, New Living Translation). My friend Carman Wolf recently observed, “Today, when we are in unfamiliar – foreign – territory, many people depend on their GPS to get information from on high. But long before satellites and GPS systems, the writer of this psalm realized he needed ‘guidance from on high’ and that the source of that guidance is God. He is the finest GPS system of all, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and no electrical connection is needed.”
구약성서의 한 구절에 “내가 땅에서는 나그네니 주의 계명을 내게서 숨기지 마소서” (시편 119:19, NLT)라고 쓰여있다. 나의 친구 카만 울프는 최근에, “오늘날, 우리가 낯선 – 외국 – 땅에 있을 때 많은 사람들은 위에서 오는 정보를 얻기 위하여 GPS에 의존한다. 그러나 위성과 GPS장치가 있기 오래 전에 이 시편 기자는 ‘위에서 오는 안내’가 필요하고 그 안내를 하는 주체는 하나님이라는 것을 깨달았다. 그분은 모든 것 중에서 가장 좋은 GPS시스템으로서, 하루 24시간, 한 주에 7일 사용할 수 있고, 전기에 연결할 필요가 없다.”
Other passages in the Bible make similar statements, assuring us of God’s guidance if we are willing to receive it:
성경의 다른 구절들도 비슷한 말씀을 하면서 우리가 기꺼이 안내를 받기 원하면 하나님께서 안내해 주실 것을 보장한다.
Believing in God’s revealed truth. Driving in the dark, we rely on the car’s headlights to illuminate the way we are going. In a similar way, God has promised to light the way as we proceed on our daily journey of work and living. “I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:104-105).
하나님이 드러내신 진리를 믿음. 어둠 속에서 운전을 하면서 우리는 가는 길을 밝히기 위하여 차의 전조등에 의존한다. 유사한 방식으로, 하나님은 우리가 일상적인 일과 생활의 여행을 하며 나아갈 때 길을 밝혀주시겠다고 약속하셨다. “내가 주의 교훈에서 깨달음을 얻으니 모든 잘못된 길을 싫어합니다. 주의 말씀은 내 발의 등불이요, 내 길의 빛입니다” (시편 119:104-105).
Trusting in God’s direction. Just as we place our confidence in the direction of a GPS system, we must trust in direction God provides, even if we do not understand it. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
하나님의 지시를 신뢰함. 우리가 GPS 시스템의 지시를 신뢰하는 것처럼 우리는 하나님이 내리는 지시를 신뢰하되 그것을 이해하지 못하더라도 그리 하여야 한다. “네 마음을 다해 여호와를 믿고 네 지식을 의지하지 마라. 네가 하는 모든 일에서 그분을 인정하여라. 그러면 그분이 네 갈 길을 알려 줄 것이다 ” (잠언 3:5-6).
Relying on God’s redirection. We must be willing to acknowledge that decisions we make will not always be right, and open to God’s prompting to alter the course we have taken – even make a sudden stop or 180-degree turn if necessary. “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps” (Proverbs 16:9).
하나님의 변경된 지시에 의지함. 우리는 우리가 내리는 결정이 항상 옳은 것은 아니라는 것을 기꺼이 인정하여야 하고, 하나님이 우리가 택한 진로를 변경하도록 – 심지어 갑자기 멈추거나 필요하면 180도 선회하도록 – 촉구하심에 맡겨야 한다. “사람이 마음으로 자기 앞길을 계획한다 해도 그 걸음은 여호와께서 이끄신다” (잠언 16:9).

1. Describe the first time you ever used a GPS system in a vehicle you were traveling in. How helpful was it – and how regularly do you rely on GPS navigation now? Have you become so accustomed to using it that you have difficulty traveling without it?
